As a Teacher and Facilitator

Horses have been the portal for stepping into my role as a teacher and facilitator.  It began with my second horse Jack, I was in my late teens and my passion for horses and interest in the study of alternative medicine, led me to enroll in a certification program to become an equine massage therapist.

The charming southern Illinois property where the training was held also served as the home of a small equine rescue.  Jack was the horse that I was paired up with to learn about facilitating massage.  Jack’s story is a long one regarding how the off-the-track thoroughbred from the Man O’ War bloodlines came to be at this equine rescue, a story for another time.  Ultimately, I was drawn to him because we shared similar conditions, he had issues with his stifles which are equivalent to our knees, and I had just gone through surgery on both of my knees.  My heart went out to this four-legged friend immediately and I ended up adopting him so that we could rehabilitate each other.  The story of rehabilitating Jack, as well as myself, was part of my initiation into the practice of alternative medicine, the healing arts, and a holistic lifestyle.

My teaching journey began through Jack when I started offering riding lessons to a co-worker’s daughter.  Little did I know, guiding that eleven-year-old girl on Jack around the arena while being fully aware of Jack’s temperament and subtle responses to the girl’s body language would pave the way for me to one day become a confident yoga instructor capable of tuning into the energy of a room full of people responding to my cues in the air, on the water, or on the mat.

I attribute so much of my patient presence as a teacher to my years as a riding instructor, teaching someone to connect with a horse offers the opportunity to be immersed in the present moment, to be fully aware of your body language, your breath, the direction of your gaze, and the thoughts in your mind.  A horse will let you know whether you are in the moment and if you are being intentional, but until you awaken enough to tune into all the feedback that the horse is giving you about yourself, a trainer (riding instructor) is there to aid you in softening to the horse’s feedback.

In my early 20’s, while attending Colorado State University for my bachelor’s in Equine Science, I enrolled as a mentor in the equine therapy program that worked with a program called Turning Point for troubled youth.  I was paired up with a young lady from the program and a horse to work with over the course of a semester to teach her how to connect with, care for, and ride a horse.  My heart swelled witnessing the horse and human connection and the incredible transformation of the young lady during our time together.  I knew that serving as a guide for others called to me.

After being inspired by my own mentors, I decided to pursue sharing my passion for aromatherapy through workshops I created utilizing essential oils with horses for raindrop techniques or everyday care.  During my equine massage training, I was reacquainted with essential oils and began attending a plethora of workshops with Cherie Ross from Young Living at equine facilities in Wisconsin, shadowing Dr. John Hanover, DVM, as well as, studying Equine Raindrop Technique with Dr. Heather Mack, DVM.  After witnessing and experiencing beautiful healing results with essential oils, I found the courage to share my voice outside of the horse arena and began my growth in a new direction as a guide for others.

Fast-forward to my mid-twenties, when I left the horse industry and decided to pursue a different path, I had just finished my personal training certification and I was serving as the metabolic coordinator and chiropractic assistant to an applied kinesiologist in Fort Collins, Colorado.  The first fitness center that I applied to be a trainer at was a yoga studio that featured a weight training area with a physiotherapist (who I later came to apprentice with).

I remember the meeting as if it were yesterday, the owner of the studio sat with me at a coffee shop in the same strip mall as the yoga studio and told me that he was excited to have me onboard; however, he felt that the clientele would respond better to me if I had my yoga certification.  The idea of becoming a yoga instructor never crossed my mind, I had been practicing yoga since I was seventeen, but I never considered teaching it, truthfully, I highly valued my role as a student when it came to yoga and all the ways it served my own healing journey.  The studio owner happened to have a 200-hour training that was launching the next month and offered a spot to me at a discounted rate as a gesture to support me and my success.  What a gift and a blessing, I had no idea at the time that when I said yes to the offering, the trajectory of my life would change.  You can always count on Spirit to nudge you in the direction that you are meant to go.  Allow yourself to be open to the influence of Spirit and you will be in awe of the angels that cross your path.

After receiving my yoga certification, I continued to pursue additional education since a 200-hour yoga teacher training merely skims the surface of the depth available.  I sought out mentors, workshops, and references in all the areas that piqued my interest which ultimately led me to blossom and grow in a multifaceted way as a teacher and facilitator.

I pursued my certification as a nutritional therapist, which I had a private practice with for several years.  In my practice, I worked with clients by reviewing lab work for their blood chemistry, observed their food journals and symptom surveys, and workshopped through the different feelings, thoughts, attitudes, and patterns around their relationship to food.  The goal with the therapy sessions with the clients was to work through the layers energetically, mentally, emotionally, and physically, to get to the place where their intuition could guide their food choices with their developed inner knowing of what the body is asking for to receive for nourishment and replenishment.

I find that due to all the time I spent and continue to spend as a student, is what has led me to become the guide for others that I am today.  I take into consideration different learning styles individuals have and I read the energy of a room to know how to best hold the space for whichever experience, or lesson is to be shared.  I find that attention to detail is important as well as providing students with learning materials that will aid them on their journey for deeper understanding and integration, all the while making space for the student to develop their own personalized experience for growth and understanding of the concepts being presented.  ‘Set the student up for success’ has remained one of my mottos over the years.  I have discovered that my time spent with horses has helped me stay grounded and exude a sense of calm to those around me, which aids students/participants in feeling like they have the anchored space they need to learn and grow.

As a Healer

My journey towards becoming an intuitive healer sparked at a young age when I began exploring the world of psychedelics in my teens which opened portals within me seeking a greater understanding and knowledge of the world. When I was seventeen years old, I had my first Divine intervention from Spirit that gave me the will and strength to completely walk away from a life that was not serving me. I remember the day as if it were yesterday, it was early August and I was standing in front of a mirror rereading a recent journal entry where I was repeating the same plea with myself, a plea that I had come to know so well since I was thirteen years old, the plea to believe in myself, to treat my body better and to leave the drugs and the people associated with them behind. While I am grateful for my brief experiences with psychedelics to support my spiritual awakening, I took a turn at some point in my exploration towards hard drugs that ended up taking the lives of friends around me and held me back in a place of stagnation. I had been writing in my journals for years knowing that I was destined for more, but I didn’t have the will to change and choose differently.

It was on this day that everything did change. I was standing there in front of the mirror and I felt an ethereal light wash over me, I swear I could see it in the mirror and a voice came through and said, “It is time, you are done,” just like that in that moment, I had the will and the strength to quit everything and everyone in my life and begin anew. I deleted and blocked everyone in my phone, I joined a gym the next day and found my way to my yoga mat. My entire life pivoted in a new direction in that very instant, it felt like a miracle to finally feel capable of channeling a newfound inner strength, determination, and will to do.

All the life that was waiting for me on the other side of that choice came rushing in quickly and Spirit took me on the most epic journey for learning the healing arts and aligning with my true nature and purpose. After receiving my training in Equine Massage Therapy when I was nineteen, I enrolled in a Reiki I attunement to expand my massage practice for the horses. I noticed a shift in my massage work with the horses after being attuned, I started to receive images in my mind while massaging the horses that showed me where their trauma came from.

After I received the download of the animal communication, the energy of the horse would shift, release, and clear leading to a positive change in their movement and demeanor.

Along the way, I was blessed to align with some of the most prestigious holistic veterinarians that introduced me to everything my heart was seeking, aromatherapy, shamanic practices, energetic meridians, magnetic therapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, ‘T’ touch, and so much more. I was presented with a cornucopia of knowledge to tap into as well as witness the astounding effects of. In addition to all the aromatherapy training I had already received, I enrolled with the Institute of Spiritual Healing and Aromatherapy where we not only studied the science of essential oils, but also worked with them for energetic support through healing touch sessions. I followed every tug at my heart strings guiding me towards uncovering the tools needed to support the pathways of holistic health and wellness; ways to balance the body, mind, and Spirit.

Eventually, life led me to Colorado where in my mid-twenties after completing my yoga teacher training, I became a reiki master. It was also around this time that I began working with Katherine Skaggs as a mentor for Shamanic practices and intuitive healing, I was drawn to her through her art where she channeled different mythical goddess archetypes onto canvas. Stepping into Shamanic journeywork and heightening my intuitive awareness deepened my connection to the Spiritual realm far beyond what I had already experienced in life. I learned how to channel my intuition through the creative process, how to facilitate shamanic drumming journeys, call in the directions, and how to hold the space for sacred ceremony and sisterhood. I was also learned how to step into community and to be vulnerable about my own healing process with others during our integration circles.

>At the time all this was unfolding for me, I was invited each full moon to sit in Inipi, which is the Lakota term for sweat lodge, where dear friends of mine, who were trained by the Lakota Tribe, conducted beautiful heartfelt traditional sacred ceremonies of purification. These experiences with community took me beyond my ego and showed me the gift of reverence, ritual, and the resounding strength of my Spirit beyond the limitations of my mind. This was all a part of my initiation process for my calling as a space holder and intuitive healer.

When I became an aerial yoga instructor is when I stepped into offering energetic healing for people rather than just animals. I was inspired to lead restorative aerial yoga and reiki workshops to share reiki recharges with students while they rested in a comfortable and supported pose with the hammock. From stepping into this role and receiving positive feedback from students, I started to gain the confidence I needed to acknowledge myself as an energetic healer for people, it took me a long time to arrive at this place.

Since answering the call so much has opened for me and I continue to be humbled and in awe of the power of intuitive energetic healing. I have discovered myself to be a clairvoyant and clairsentient healer in that I receive symbolic visuals as well as physical sensations while facilitating an energetic healing session that can help guide the energy to where it needs to go and provide clients with insight, validation, or greater understanding of what is showing up for them energetically at the time of our paths crossing.

The Blessings of Aviana

Since the inception of Aviana from the Spirit realm to serve as the archetype of embodied Divine Feminine energy to traverse this Golden Age of Enlightenment with open hearts-wings, her blessings have been abundant!

When I look back now over the Aviana journey, I can see where she ignited the calling that put everything in motion which helped her to be made manifest through the cocooned womb of the aerial yoga fabric.  Her conception from the cosmos began with every spark of inspiration that flooded my body with delight and illuminated my mind to flow with idea after idea of all the people who the aerial hammock could serve as I moved and swayed with the fabric for the very first time.

She was there, in the courage I needed to conjure to approach the owner of the local pole fitness studio in Fort Collins, Colorado to ask if I could install aerial hammocks to be able to share the offerings of aerial yoga.  Aviana met me that day in the welcoming energy I was greeted with from the studio owner, who, it turned out, recently became curious about aerial yoga, and found my timing to be synchronistic with her intention to want to share this practice in her space.  Aviana was with me the day I climbed the 14-foot ladder with my hands shaking in fear as I installed each of the rigs, she whispered to my inner being that I was on the brink of something big, to relinquish my fear of heights and grow.  I was on the path now and felt Aviana expanding my wings blessing me with a budding sisterhood of support and aligning me with all that was meant to be.

She hadn’t made herself fully known yet by the name of Aviana, her image and name were not ready to take shape as she was still in her gestation period and not ready to be seen.  When I was guided back to Illinois, she remained with me and continued to bless my journey with a balanced exchange of giving and receiving, of my masculine and my feminine.  I put forth the focused effort required to create the first edition of Soaring with the Soul: An Aerial Yoga Guide and the first website that started to ripple my intention into the world which was met with an invitation to Indonesia to share my very first aerial yoga teacher training.  This invitation that came through from the website that I had just launched merely one week prior was all the confirmation I needed to know that this was to be my path for the time being.  Aviana coming into my life has been nothing short of magical.

I was invited to Bali, Indonesia for an entire month where I would share my aerial yoga teacher training with a group of nine women all from different countries.  It is where the current Aviana Aerial Yoga Teacher Training curriculum was birthed into being.

Now as a whole, the journey hasn’t been one of complete ease and effortless flow, how would we learn, grow, and improve if we weren’t faced with challenges and contrast?  How would we know what feels right if we do not experience what feels wrong?  This is how we know where we align, where to implement boundaries, and where we need to check in with ourselves and what we are creating.  It is a dance of putting energy out, receiving feedback from Spirit and reassessing where we may need to recalibrate ourselves and course correct.  Oftentimes, we get caught up in our own agenda and forget to invite the co-creative process with Spirit.  Looking back, I can see where I stubbornly pushed through rather than surrendered.  It is part of the process we are in as a collective, we are restructuring, and it requires sacred destruction to reform like the phoenix rising.

After returning from Bali, I continued to share the practice of aerial yoga with others, but the initial name that served as the vessel for this program was not sitting right.  Aviana was nearing the end of her gestation period and was gearing up to be birthed into the light.  I received another invitation; this time it was to Ecuador.  The invitation was to partake in a week-long tour of the Galapagos at sea to co-author a book about the tour with one of the guides on the trip.  I arranged for the trip to be a month long and included a trip to the Young Living Farm, and a work-away stay at an off the grid farm in the cloud forest.  I set the intention before I left on this trip that the new name that was meant to be the vessel for my offerings would be called in.

Aviana answered the call.  I remember the moment, I was staying at Sacha Ji in Otavalo, Ecuador, which is a sustainable yoga retreat center where the night skies were so vivid and bright with stars that you felt like you could reach out and touch them.  I was sitting with the energy of the mountain, reflecting on the beautiful divine feminine energy I was surrounded with since arriving in Ecuador and all that had transpired with my work up until that point.  I knew the name need to have the sound of manifestation in it, ‘ah’ and I knew I wanted it to represent flight and the feminine.  Then it was as if one of the stars dropped down into my body and gave me a burst of inspiration and clarity, I said the name Aviana out loud, and the goddess was born.

When I returned to the States, there was a new clarity around my offerings and what it is that I was to co-create with the goddess Aviana.  It was another layer of the lotus flower unfurling to the light that wasn’t ready to be accessed until I had experienced everything that had led me to that moment sitting in a hammock on a mountainside in Ecuador communing with the stars.
